  • Tools Needed:
    • Rotary cutter
    • Quilting ruler
    • Cutting mat
    • Sewing machine
    • Iron
    • Pins

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Fabric Cutting

Start by accurately cutting your fabric as per the specified measurements. Precision in cutting is crucial for achieving a polished final product.

Step 2: Assemble the Center Block

  1. Begin with the center square (Piece A).
  2. Take the triangles (Piece B) and fold them wrong sides together to locate the center.
  3. Align the triangle’s center with the square’s center and pin it in place.
  4. Sew using a quarter-inch seam allowance to ensure your block measures 12.5 inches.

Step 3: Create Flying Geese Units

  1. Use the larger triangles (Piece G) and the smaller triangles (Piece C).
  2. Position the triangles so that their points align, and sew along the edge.
  3. Press the seams open and trim any dog ears to maintain a neat appearance.
  4. Repeat this process until you have a total of four flying geese units.

Step 4: Construct Corner Units

  1. Place the triangles (Piece D) on adjacent corners of the squares (Piece E).
  2. Ensure that the triangles point toward the center of the block.
  3. If using directional fabric, carefully pin the pieces before sewing.
  4. Sew and press the seams, trimming any excess fabric as needed.

Step 5: Assemble the Block

  1. Arrange the flying geese units around the center square.
  2. Match the corner units with the flying geese, ensuring all points are correctly aligned.
  3. Pin everything together, taking care to manage any bias edges during sewing.

Step 6: Final Assembly

  1. Sew the sections together one at a time, making sure to align the seams accurately.
  2. Once all sections are attached, give the block a final press and trim any remaining dog ears for a clean finish.

Final Touches

After completing your block, press it one last time. Your finished Broken Star Quilt Block will be a beautiful testament to your quilting skills!
