The Twinkling Stars Quilt is a cheerful star quilt from Missouri Star Quilt Co., taught by Jenny Doan.
Instead of complicated templates or unusual angles, the design combines two familiar patchwork units: Half-Square Triangles and Four Patches.
The finished quilt measures approximately 74" × 84" and is built around 5-inch squares, background fabric, sashing and borders.
This guide organizes the main construction ideas, fabric planning, Half-Square Triangle accuracy, Four-Patch assembly, block layout and finishing tips while directing you to Missouri Star for the official tutorial, free layout PDF and written pattern.

What Makes the Twinkling Stars Quilt So Approachable?
The finished quilt looks like a field of traditional stars, but Jenny's construction avoids complicated star templates.
Each star grows from familiar patchwork components:
- simple 2½-inch squares,
- Half-Square Triangle units,
- Four Patches,
- and straightforward sashing.
Repeating those basic units creates a much more intricate-looking quilt than the individual pieces suggest.
Missouri Star currently provides the Twinkling Stars video tutorial and layout PDF free. The complete written Twinkling Stars pattern is sold separately, so this project should not be labeled as a free written quilt pattern.
Official Fabric Requirements
Missouri Star currently lists the following supplies for the featured Twinkling Stars quilt:
- 4 packs of 5" print squares,
- 1 pack of 5" solid/background squares,
- 2 yards of background fabric,
- 1½ yards for the outer border,
- and approximately 5¼ yards for backing.
Always check the current Missouri Star pattern or tutorial resources before purchasing fabric, especially if you plan to resize the quilt.
Choosing Fabrics for Twinkling Stars
The design works especially well when the colorful charm squares stand out clearly against the background fabric.
A light background creates the classic bright star look, while a dark background can give the same block a dramatically different appearance.
Bright Scrappy Stars
Use many different prints from a coordinated charm-square collection.
Rainbow Stars
Sort squares into red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple groups and distribute them throughout the quilt.
Two-Color Version
Use one main color family against a neutral background for a calmer, more traditional quilt.
Low-Volume Background
Soft cream, gray or white-on-white prints can add texture without competing with the star points.
Step 1: Cut the 5-Inch Squares into Quarters
Jenny begins by dividing selected 5-inch squares into four equal 2½-inch squares.
Cutting accurately at this stage helps every Four Patch and star-point section fit correctly later.
Stack only as many layers as you can cut safely and accurately.
Step 2: Prepare the Four-Patch Units
The Four Patch is one of the two basic building blocks in Twinkling Stars.
Arrange contrasting 2½-inch squares so the colors alternate diagonally.
Sew them into pairs, press the seams, then join the pairs to complete the Four Patch.
Nest the Center Seams
Press neighboring seams in opposite directions where practical so the center intersection can nest.
This helps the four small squares meet cleanly and keeps the unit flat.
Step 3: Make the Half-Square Triangles
Half-Square Triangles create the pointed sections that make the stars appear to twinkle.
Place the required light and print squares right sides together.
Mark or finger-press a diagonal guideline, sew according to the Missouri Star tutorial, then cut and press the units open.
Trim HSTs Before Block Assembly
Check every Half-Square Triangle before joining it to another unit.
A slightly oversized or skewed HST can shift the star points and make later seams difficult to match.
Trim the units square if necessary before continuing.

If you want extra guidance on marking, pressing, trimming and chain piecing, see our Half-Square Triangle Tips .
Twinkling Stars is an excellent project for putting those HST skills into practice.
Step 4: Lay Out One Complete Star Block
Arrange the HSTs and Four Patches according to the official Missouri Star layout.
Pay close attention to the direction of every triangle.
A single rotated HST can break the visual star shape even if the sewing itself is perfect.
Once the star looks correct, take a clear photo before sewing. Keep that image beside your sewing machine as a reference while making the remaining blocks.
Step 5: Sew the Star Block in Sections
Join neighboring units into smaller sections first.
Press each section before joining the complete block.
Working this way makes it easier to keep the star points and Four-Patch intersections aligned.
Make One Test Block Before Batch Sewing
Complete one entire star block before sewing all of the repeated units.
Check:
- your quarter-inch seam allowance,
- HST orientation,
- Four-Patch orientation,
- the block measurement,
- and the star-point alignment.
Use Chain Piecing Once the Layout Is Confirmed
After the first block is correct, repeated Four Patches and HSTs can be sewn in batches.
Chain piecing keeps production moving efficiently and reduces unnecessary thread trimming.
Step 6: Add Sashing Between the Blocks
The finished Twinkling Stars quilt separates the star blocks with background sashing.
This extra negative space prevents the stars from visually crowding one another and helps each block remain distinct.
Measure Before Cutting Long Sashing Strips
Verify the actual dimensions of your completed rows before cutting the longest sashing pieces.
Small variations across many blocks can change the real measurement of the quilt top.
Step 7: Build the Quilt Rows
Arrange the completed blocks and sashing according to the official Twinkling Stars layout.
Missouri Star's finished quilt contains seven rows.
Label each row before carrying blocks to the sewing machine.
Photograph the Full Quilt Layout
Once you are satisfied with the distribution of prints and colors, photograph the entire arrangement.
This helps prevent blocks or rows from being placed in the wrong order.
Step 8: Add the Inner and Outer Borders
Once the rows and sashing are joined, add the borders according to the official instructions.
Missouri Star's featured version uses a generous outer border that helps frame the colorful star field.
Measure the actual quilt center before cutting the final border lengths.
Finished Quilt Size
Missouri Star lists the completed Twinkling Stars quilt at approximately:
74" × 84"
Quilting Ideas for Twinkling Stars
Simple Edge-to-Edge Quilting
A light all-over design keeps the star piecing as the visual focus.
Straight-Line Quilting
Straight lines complement the strong geometry of the HSTs and Four Patches.
Echo the Stars
Quilt parallel to selected star seams to emphasize the points.
Quilt the Background More Densely
Denser quilting in the negative space can help the star blocks stand out visually.
Common Twinkling Stars Mistakes to Avoid
Rotating an HST
Keep the official layout or a reference photo beside your sewing machine.
Skipping HST Trimming
Check the units before block assembly so inaccurate triangles do not distort the stars.
Mixing Up Four-Patch Orientation
Make sure the contrasting squares alternate in the intended direction.
Using Too Little Contrast
Distinct values between prints and background make the stars easier to see.
Cutting Borders from Theoretical Measurements
Measure the actual assembled quilt before preparing long border strips.
